New Leadership Doctoral Degree
Università Iuav di Venezia is launching the roadmap for an Environment Design for Global Challenges Chair, focusing on transforming cities and regional areas in the wake of climate, economic, and social upheavals. The Chair will serve as a platform for fostering collaboration among architecture, urban design, planning, and environmental sciences, facilitating the exchange of information, developing educational tools, and engaging with local administrations, ultimately shaping the future towards equity and ecology.

Education plays a vital role in fostering collaboration. Promoting global citizenship and raising awareness of common challenges equips individuals to contribute effectively to transformative efforts. Creating a space for exchange and collective growth is necessary; this space should value the vast plurality of local communities as a driving force for development that supports human civilization. Support and development projects benefit from the most advanced planning and design techniques, applied from an ecosystem perspective.
Educating change-maker professionals and administration are starting to consider the PhD as an opportunity for developing cutting-edge skills. In the PhD program, the frontal training phase concludes, and each individual undertakes their cultural development in a one-to-one relationship with a limited number of professors. Often, this moment is wasted, resulting in a useless contribution to society. The Chair will establish a PhD program that is tailored to specific cases, aiming to develop new tools to address global challenges according to the individual needs and interests of students.
Empower local self-effectiveness while International agreements and large-scale organisations are crucial, but grassroots movements are equally vital. Empowering local communities to engage in global initiatives ensures that efforts are grounded and impactful. Local leaders and activists provide critical insights that bridge the gap between international and localised realities. The Chair will develop and share innovative approaches to address this daunting challenge.
Engage with multilateral InstitutionsIUAV has a long-standing and continuous cooperation with several multilateral institutions, including the UNFCCC, UNESCO, UN-Habitat, the World Bank, and the WHO. The Chair will serve as a pivotal entity for coordinating and policymaking in these cooperations. Dedicating an academic environment to act as a pivot between these and local realities through training and support for transformative practices means strengthening these institutions, improving their accountability, and promoting their effectiveness in major global transformations.
